ABOUT ABOUT

"We are not makers of history. We are made by history.”

When the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life was ended in Memphis, Tennessee more than 5 decades ago, it was impossible to understand the gravity his absence would bear. In the years and decades that followed, his life’s work and mission continue to inspire trajectories of hope, justice, and peace for many lives – truly, Dr. King has become a part of the history that continues to shape us all to this day.

Please join an ensemble cast for the 2nd Annual Long Live the King: A Jazzified Tribute to Dr. King on April 4th, 2020 – 52 years exactly since the night Dr. King was tragically taken from this world. Taking a wide view of the music Dr. King inspired during his life and after his passing, the ensemble will offer many beautiful and evocative pieces for a special, one-night-only performance. As is the norm with any Jazzified show, many of these songs are specially arranged just for this night, and may never be performed again, including putting different pieces together into reimagined new compositions or bringing out the inherent jazz that lies waiting in any song.

Performers this evening include Dr. Damani Phillips and Iowa CJC Jazz Hall of Famer Pete Simonson. Don’t miss one of the most meaningful musical experiences you can have in 2020 at the 2nd Annual Long Live the King!
